Your paper may need more than editing.
You might come to me because you need an editor. Maybe you're preparing a paper for submission. Maybe you've received an R&R and you are not quite sure what to do with it. Perhaps the paper has been rejected and you know it needs another look.
Sometimes, the writing simply needs polishing. Too often, though, I find that something else is going on. It could be the contribution which isn't coming through clearly, or the introduction that isn't setting up the paper properly. Sometimes I get halfway through a manuscript and realize that I'm struggling to follow the argument. And sometimes it's harder to put your finger on the problem: the paper simply isn't working as well as it should.
This is where experience matters. After more than 20 years of editing academic papers, I know how to look beyond individual sentences and ask what the paper as a whole is trying to do. I can see where you're losing your reader and help you work out what needs to change.
AI can help you write, but you still need to know how to write.
ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools can be useful thinking partners. I use them too. But the quality of what you get from an LLM depends heavily on what you ask it to do.
If you don't understand why your introduction isn't working, for example, you could ask ChatGPT to "improve" it. You will get smoother sentences, but the underlying problem with the introduction will still be there.
The same is true when you use AI to help with an argument, a literature review, or an R&R. You need enough expertise to know what you're asking for and, perhaps more importantly, to judge what comes back.
This is why I believe the craft of writing matters more in the age of AI, not less. Learning to write well isn't about refusing to use these tools. It's what allows you to use them well.
And sometimes you need another human reader. Someone who can tell when something isn't convincing, notice what you haven't said, question an assumption, or see a possibility in the paper that you haven't seen yourself. That's the kind of work I've spent more than 20 years learning to do.
